WOMEN IN THE BIBLE
REBEKAH,
ISAAC’S WIFE

GENESIS 24 & 27

GOD CHOOSES REBEKAH
AS ISAAC’S WIFE

Abraham said to the chief servant, “Go to my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac. The LORD, the God of heaven, will send his angel before you.”

Then the servant left for the town of Nahor. He had the camels kneel down near the well; it was evening, the time the women go out to draw water.

Then he prayed, “O LORD, give me success today. See, the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that a girl says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for Isaac.”

Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out. She was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.

The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”

“Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink. After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking.” So she drew enough for all his camels. Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD.

The girl ran and told her mother’s household about these things. Now Rebekah had a brother named Laban, and he hurried out to the man at the spring. Laban answered, “This is from the LORD; we can say nothing to you one way or the other. Here is Rebekah; take her and go, and let her become the wife of your master’s son, as the LORD has directed.”

So they called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”

“I will go,” she said.

So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way, along with her nurse and Abraham’s servant and his men. So the servant took Rebekah and left.

REBEKAH MEETS ISAAC

Now Isaac had come from Beer Lahai Roi, for he was living in the Negev. He went out to the field one evening to meditate, and as he looked up, he saw camels approaching. Rebekah also looked up and saw Isaac. She got down from her camel and asked the servant, “Who is that man in the field coming to meet us?”

“He is my master,” the servant answered. So she took her veil and covered herself. Then the servant told Isaac all he had done. Isaac brought her into the tent of his mother Sarah, and he married Rebekah. So she became his wife, and he loved her; and Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

REBEKAH DECEIVES ISAAC

When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son. Isaac said, “Go hunt some wild game for me, so that I may give you my blessing before I die.”

Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father. Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies.”

Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins. Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

He went to his father and said, “My father.”

Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.” Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he blessed him. “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked. “I am,” he replied.

Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

So he went to him and kissed him. Isaac blessed him and said, “May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed.”

I’ve always thought Esau got a raw deal, but God has plans we cannot always understand.

Esau cooperated by selling his birthright as firstborn—and he ended up tremendously wealthy anyway.

Esau was a man given to following his own lusts.

He gave away his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of Lentil soup. He married Caananite women.

Jacob was no prize either. However, God had a plan for him, and helped him grow in his faith.

If I were Isaac, this one would be my pick. IMO, the most feminine and pretty of the bunch...

No, but if I find a girl like that I'll try to remember to let you know.

There's also something about Doré's drawings that stand out for me.

Love what you do here. Thanks.

Gotta say, what other site anywhere affords the wealth of variety of interest and expression that FR offers? God bless this site.
